You’re hitting a breaking point with the constant overthinking.
You feel stuck in your relationships or at work, but are overwhelmed by the idea of change.
I offer customized, results oriented psychotherapy for adults and couples who want to manage their anxiety and moods, navigate transitions, and create meaningful relationships.
Results-Oriented Therapy
Dealing with chronic worrying, tough relationships, unpredictable moods, difficulty with school/work, and life transitions can lead to anxiety that is high and self confidence that is low.
Well-meaning loved ones may tell you to “just relax” or “stop being negative,” but this can feel about as realistic as changing the weather.
Do any of these ring true to you?
You are your own worst critic, and feel as though no matter what you accomplish, you’re never good enough.
You find yourself fixated on what others think of you, leading to perfectionism or people pleasing
You seem to always have something you’re worried about, often bogged down by fear about what will happen next
You feel stuck in one or more area of your life, but feel overwhelmed by the idea of change
You are going through a transition, such as a move or relationship or career change
Whether you’ve been feeling this way for a few weeks or for a few years, I can help you gain the confidence you need to handle the next obstacle.
“A calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that’s very important for good health.”
– Dalai Lama
ADHD
ADHD is not a personal failing, and yet it can touch just about every domain of life. Sometimes it’s big things like focus or emotion regulation, but day to day struggles with things like avoidance and punctuality can really take a hit on your self esteem.
With a deep understanding of the neurodevelopmental impact of ADHD, I can help you replace self-criticism with self-compassion, and to embrace your unique ways of thinking.
At the same time, practical strategies to decrease behaviors like avoidance, procrastination and impulsivity are introduced to help minimize negative impacts of ADHD on daily life. With a balanced approach of acceptance and skill-building, I can help you take active steps toward managing ADHD symptoms in a healthy, sustainable way.
Anxiety
Many people with anxiety are chronic “what if-ers.” What if I never find the right partner? What if I say something awkward at happy hour, and now my boss is mad at me? CBT can help you identify and reframe your thoughts about what might happen, allowing you to enjoy the present moment without fixating on what may or may not happen in the future.
In addition to generalized or situational anxiety, I have experience working with people suffering from panic attacks, social anxiety, perfectionism, or specific phobias.
OCD
Intrusive, scary thoughts sometimes float into all of our brains for no reason. Ideally, you would just think, “huh, what a weird thought,” and move on. However, if you struggle with OCD these thoughts can feel intolerable and lead to rumination, avoidance, reassurance seeking, and checking behaviors.
Luckily, OCD is very treatable with an evidence-based treatment called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). You know how a pool feels freezing when you first jump in, but eventually you get used to it? ERP works similarly. By initially facing the situations that spark obsessions within a safe environment in small and gradual ways, fears will become less overwhelming.
Interpersonal relationships
Our relationships have a huge influence on our overall mood and self-esteem. While many people may focus primarily on romantic relationships, those with your boss, roommate or sister can also be equally demanding. Therapy can help with both the goal of cultivating more meaningful relationships, as well as changing how how you show up in existing ones.
Whether you’re the type who tends to impulsively fly off the handle, or whether the idea of confrontation makes you break out in hives, I can help you learn to slow down and make proactive, rather than reactive decisions about how you want to define and manage your relationships.
Life transitions
Some transitions come into our lives whether we feel ready or not. Events like job losses, break ups, or world altering pandemics can require grieving what you thought your life might look like, and reorienting yourself to figure out where to go from here. Other transitions might be ones you not only planned, but pined for—things like going to college, a new relationship, moving cities or becoming a parent. Now that you got what you wanted, you feel like you should be grateful, but instead you’re riddled with anxiety.
I can help you process disappointment, learn new coping skills, and set new routines and expectations so that you are able to move forward productively.
Depression
Depression shows up in multiple ways. Sometimes it can look like withdrawing from activities or a change in functioning, while others appear totally functional from the outside. Either way, depression can leave you feeling drained by usually enjoyable activities and generally feeling helpless.
Depression often robs people of the hope that things can feel better, but starting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be a great first step. Most people notice that as they work on changing previously rigid thought patterns and develop new coping skills, their mood and ability to feel hopeful about the future shifts as well.
Couples
Many people looking for a relationship tell me that finding a good partner would fix all their problems, only to realize that finding a partner is only the first step in creating a lasting healthy relationship.
Building a life with a partner who has differing life experiences, emotional responses, and needs can lead to tension, arguing or resentment in your relationship. It is helpful to have an objective person mediate your discussions, provide tools to get through difficult periods, and teach you ways to communicate more effectively.

Julia Lawrence, LCSW
In 2013, I became the Director of Operations for a New York City Councilman. This was an amazing experience, but things move very slowly in politics. I found myself wondering how I might be able to see change in a more tangible and direct way.
Social work involved a mix of clinical and policy classes, so it seemed like a good fit, leading me to attend The University of Pennsylvania School of Policy and Practice.

Beginning in 2016, while in graduate school, I provided assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy, and crisis intervention for a diverse population at an acute psychiatric hospital. In addition, I provided both individual and group therapy at Temple University’s college counseling center. From 2018-2022 I worked at a group private practice before starting Julia Lawrence Psychotherapy.
Outside of work, you can usually find me cuddling my dog (ok, really anyone's dog), reading, or on a beach when possible.
While I take the work we do seriously, I also like it when clients send me photos of their dogs. Don’t be surprised if I send you a meme or video that reminds me of a conversation we had in session . Though I utilize many modalities, my background is in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other solution-focused therapies.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence based goal oriented approach that helps teach you how to become aware of your thoughts, emotions and behaviors. In addition, we will explore your beliefs about these problems, and how negative or inaccurate thinking may be contributing to your emotional experience.
My clients have described me as warm, empathetic, relatable, and occasionally sarcastic. People appreciate that I am an active participant in therapy.

Therapy generally begins with a free fifteen-minute phone consultation. During this time, you’ll have a chance to tell me what you’re hoping to get help with, as well as any other goals or information you think would be important for me to know. If it sounds like a good fit, I’ll give you my thoughts on how I might be able to help and answer any questions. We will also discuss fees and scheduling. If you prefer to skip the consult, we can schedule over email and discuss these things during our first session.
-
Typically individual sessions are 45 minutes, couples sessions are an hour. If you’re looking for a longer individual session this is something I’m happy to discuss.

I offer both telehealth and in person sessions. Telehealth is conducted via a secure HIPPA platform to clients located anywhere in New York State. I also offer limited in person sessions conveniently located in the financial district at __________. If you’d like to know if I have availability that matches your schedule, you can email me at _______ prior to our consult.
-
At this time, I do not take insurance directly, and am an out of network provider. This means that the full fee is due at the time of the session, and each month I will provide you with a “superbill” that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. If you’re confused about out of network benefits, I will be happy to try to answer any questions.
-
I do! If you do not have out of network benefits or the fee is too costly, I have a limited number of sliding scale spots. The rate for these is determined by both your income and other situational factors.
