You’re hitting a breaking point with the constant overthinking.

You feel stuck in your relationships or at work, but are overwhelmed by the idea of change.

I offer customized, results oriented psychotherapy for adults and couples who want to manage their anxiety and moods, navigate transitions, and create meaningful relationships.

Results-Oriented Therapy

You’re a great friend or partner, but the fear of disappointing those people has made you allergic to conflict, leading to people pleasing.
It’s exhausting, and it can lead to anxiety that is high, and self confidence that is low.

I can help you stop the spiraling.

I work collaboratively with people to change counterproductive thoughts and behaviors, while simultaneously strengthening thinking patterns that support the changes we aspire to make in our lives. I listen actively, offering practical solutions and techniques to help us better cope with challenges, all punctuated with a sense of humor.

For anxious New Yorkers, our virtues are often the same as our vices.

What allows you to ace presentations leads you to procrastinate on starting them if they might not be perfect.

Do any of these ring true to you?

  • You are your own worst critic, and feel as though no matter what you accomplish, you’re never good enough.

  • You find yourself fixated on what others think of you, leading to perfectionism or people pleasing

  • You seem to always have something you’re worried about, often bogged down by fear about what will happen next

  • You feel stuck in one or more area of your life, but feel overwhelmed by the idea of change

  • You are going through a transition, such as a move or relationship or career change

Whether you’ve been feeling this way for a few weeks or for a few years, I can help you gain the confidence you need to handle the next obstacle.

“A calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that’s very important for good health.”

Services & Specialties

Tele-health and in person sessions

If you want to stick with doing therapy in your pajamas,
I offer primarily telehealth services at this time.

Want a break from your screens?
I hear you. I do see clients in person 1-2 days a week in the Financial district/TriBeCA area of New York City at 225 Broadway, New York, NY.

I complete telehealth via HIPPA compliant Zoom.

Julia Lawrence, LCSW

In 2013, I became the Director of Operations for a New York City Councilman. This was an amazing experience, but things move very slowly in politics. I found myself wondering how I might be able to see change in a more tangible and direct way.

Social work involved a mix of clinical and policy classes, so it seemed like a good fit, leading me to attend The University of Pennsylvania School of Policy and Practice.

  • • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy 35-Hour Certification Program, University of Pennsylvania, 2017

    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy 35 Hour Training Course, University of Pennsylvania, 2017

    • Treating Anxiety with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Deborah Melamed, PhD, Soho Cognitive, 2018

    • Gottman Method for Couples Therapy, Level I, 2020

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Personality Variables, The Beck Institute, 2019

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for OCD, Mass General Hospital, 2020

Beginning in 2016, while in graduate school, I provided assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy, and crisis intervention for a diverse population at an acute psychiatric hospital. In addition, I provided both individual and group therapy at Temple University’s college counseling center. From 2018-2022 I worked at a group private practice before starting Julia Lawrence Psychotherapy.
Outside of work, you can usually find me cuddling my dog (ok, really anyone's dog), reading, or on a beach when possible.

While I take the work we do seriously, I also like it when clients send me photos of their dogs. Don’t be surprised if I send you a meme or video that reminds me of a conversation we had in session . Though I utilize many modalities, my background is in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other solution-focused therapies.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence based goal oriented approach that helps teach you how to become aware of your thoughts, emotions and behaviors. In addition, we will explore your beliefs about these problems, and how negative or inaccurate thinking may be contributing to your emotional experience.

My clients have described me as warm, empathetic, relatable, and occasionally sarcastic. People appreciate that I am an active participant in therapy.

  • Therapy generally begins with a free fifteen-minute phone consultation. During this time, you’ll have a chance to tell me what you’re hoping to get help with, as well as any other goals or information you think would be important for me to know. If it sounds like a good fit, I’ll give you my thoughts on how I might be able to help and answer any questions. We will also discuss fees and scheduling. If you prefer to skip the consult, we can schedule over email and discuss these things during our first session.

  • Typically individual sessions are 45 minutes, couples sessions are an hour. If you’re looking for a longer individual session this is something I’m happy to discuss.

  • I offer both telehealth and in person sessions. Telehealth is conducted via a secure HIPPA platform to clients located anywhere in New York State. I also offer limited in person sessions conveniently located in the financial district at __________. If you’d like to know if I have availability that matches your schedule, you can email me at _______ prior to our consult.

  • At this time, I do not take insurance directly, and am an out of network provider. This means that the full fee is due at the time of the session, and each month I will provide you with a “superbill” that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. If you’re confused about out of network benefits, I will be happy to try to answer any questions.

  • I do! If you do not have out of network benefits or the fee is too costly, I have a limited number of sliding scale spots. The rate for these is determined by both your income and other situational factors.
